Masters of Horror (2005)

Era una sera del 2002, e quelle che sedevano al tavolo di un non meglio precisato ristorante di Sherman Oaks, California, non erano persone comuni. Erano dei Masters of Horror.

John Landis: << It’s really funny the way these projects began.

There was this television documentary called Masters of Horror ( ndr. Documentario del 2002 conosciuto anche come Boogeymen II: Masters of Horror presentato da Bruce Campbell, e sequel di Boogeymen: The Killer Compilation, del 2001), and it was about George Romero, Tobe Hooper, Wes Craven, John Carpenter, Guillermo Del Toro and myself, and a whole bunch of horror movie directors.

Mick Garris called everybody and said, ‘Hey, we should have a dinner and call it the "Masters of Horror Dinner!" ’.

So we met in the Valley last year: Guillermo, Tobe, myself, Sam Raimi and Carpenter, David Cronenberg was there once…a whole bunch of people, and it was very fun, because we got very silly and it was like: “The Masters of Horror have coffee!” or “The Masters of Horror order dessert!” >>

Si trattava della prima di una lunga serie di cene organizzate dal regista Mick Garris, cene a cui nel corso degli anni hanno preso parte i registi più influenti, o anche solo amanti, del genere, come John Carpenter, Tobe Hooper, Joe Dante, Stuart Gordon, Larry Cohen, John Landis, William Malone, Don Coscarelli, Guillermo Del Toro, Sam Raimi, David Cronenberg, Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, Eli Roth, Dario Argento, Wes Craven e chi più ne ha più ne metta..

Ma Mick Garris non si è limitato ad unire i Masters of Horror solo a tavola (per la gioia di Del Toro).

Nel 2005, infatti, produce la serie Masters of Horror. Si tratta di una serie antologica, ovvero i cui episodi sono totalmente slegati l’ uno dall’ altro, e sono uniti unicamente dal tema dell’ Horror. Serie simili sono la celeberrima Twilight Zone – Ai Confini della Realtà, 1959/2003, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, 1959/1962, Tales from the Crypt – I Racconti della Cripta, 1989/1996, Hammer House of Horror, 1988, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, 1992/2001, e Piccoli Brividi, 1995/1998, Nightmares and Dreamscapes –Incubi e Deliri, 2006, Freddy's Nightmares, 1988/1990.

Ogni film, ovviamente, è affidato alla regia di un diverso regista e di un diverso sceneggiatore, a cui è data piena libertà artistica. Unici limiti della produzione sono: 1,5 milioni di Dollari di Budget, un’ora di durata, nessun nudo maschile e nessuna violenza commessa da bambini su altri bambini.

È facile capire come quindi la serie spazii vastamente dalla tensione allo splatter più crudo.
Naturalmente anche il cast riprende famosi attori associati a ruoli horror, come Robert Englund, famoso per aver indossato la maschera di Freddy Krueger nella serie Nightmare, Tony Todd, dalla trilogia di CandyMan, o Angus Scrimm, dalla serie Phantasm.
Alcuni episodi riprendono le storie di grandi della letteratura dell' orrore, come Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Lovecraft e Richard Matheson.

Mick Garris: << It's a long story. But a couple years ago, I organized informal gatherings of genre directors for the occasional dinner together. They have been great fun. I had been trying to create a horror anthology with they guys who really know how to make scary movies, and I went to several of the veterans and asked if they would be interested. To my amazement, we got fully financed without even having a network attached, and the guys were enthusiastic about it.

This is a 'no-rules' show. It's being produced completely independently, and as long as it can be done on time and on budget, the creative issues are in the hands of the directors. There are no commercials, and there is no real censorship. I don't really want to get into specifics at this point, but some of them even go too far for me!... >>

  John Landis: << We’ve done that four or five times now, with different people every time, but the good thing Garris did was he put together a deal with this company to make a series of movies called MASTERS OF HORROR - which I think is a really stupid label - where each one of us is supposed to direct a movie, so now we are doing it. They are giving us a budget of $1.5 million for each film, and with that money we can basically do anything we want, as long as it’s shot in Vancouver, with the same crew. And it has to be scary, somehow!
"I’m doing the first one," Landis continues, "and John Carpenter, Tobe Hooper, Sam Raimi, George Romero and Hideo Nakata are all doing one. They’re trying to make it much more international now. It’s an interesting deal because Anchor Bay owns the DVD rights only for the United States, so we are free to do whatever we want on everything else. So we might do a feature, cutting together 


two or three episodes, or something for cable television. What’s fun is that because it’s DVD, there’s no censorship at all, so MASTERS OF HORROR is going to be pretty gruesome and outrageous. >>

Ci rendiamo conto?

John Carpenter: << It's a little series we're doing for Showtime. We each have an hour. Each of us has an hour to shoot in ten days. And the first director they got was John Landis. He's now way over budget and way over schedule. So there may not be anymore 'Masters of Horror'. He may do them in. Dario Argento starts next week. They pushed me later on the schedule because they're going to take all the money out of my show and put it in everybody else's... I'll be shooting in July at some point. As I said, the first director up was John Landis.

Last night I had dinner with Dario Argento. He's the second one up. They are going to kick the crew's ass so by the time I get there you know. It'll be fun to do. >>

 Inizialmente finanziata dalla Anchor Bay Entertainment come prodotto Direct-to-DVD, la serie è stata poi trasmessa dal canale via cavo americano Showtime, dal 2005 al 2007.

In totale sono state prodotte 2 stagioni di 13 episodi ciascuno (è il caso di dire “13 a tavola”), mentre una terza stagione spirituale è stata prodotta da Garris assieme alla Lionsgate, dando vita nel 2008 alla miniserie Fear Itself, sempre di 13 episodi.

La serie ha inoltre dato vita ad un poco prolifico spin-off di 6 puntate, Masters of Science Fiction, dal tema fantascientifico.

È tutta italiana, invece, l’ iniziativa Italian Masters Horror, ufficializzata ormai dal Giugno del 2006, e prodotta addirittura dall’ Istituto Luce, ma di cui si sa ancora poco. Si tratta di 4 lungometraggi per il cinema ed il mercato DVD, Murder House – La Casa del Delitto, di Lamberto Bava, Horror Baby – La Bimba dell’ Orrore, di Umberto Lenzi, The Corners of the Night – Gli Angoli della Notte, di Sergio Martino, mentre il quarto progetto appartiene al meno noto Nicola Rondolino. Umberto Lenzi: << Ho accettato con entusiasmo, specialmente per il desiderio di confrontarmi con il digitale, la post-produzione e la possibilità di evadere la censura televisiva, visto che i registi come me non possono proprio lavorarci. Il mio Horror Baby sarà una horror ambizioso, senza ricorso al fantastico, quindi a zombi e nemmeno a serial killer estremi, ma avrà per protagonista una quindicenne disabile che dovrà affrontare eventi agghiaccianti. Un racconto sul quotidiano in cui cercherò di esprimere il mio stile. >>

Lamberto Bava: << Girerò il mio Murder House in una villa torinese dove, mentre un musicista suona, avvengono degli omicidi brutali. Stilisticamente cercherò di rifarmi allo stile dei miei film più "chiusi", come Demoni. >>

Avventure Oniriche

Premettiamo che da un pò di tempo il mio sonno è caratterizzato da incubi o sogni confusi e dalle trame complicate che mi fanno svegliare a intervalli di un' ora o mezz' ora nel cuore della notte, completamente sudato e assetato...

Stanotte ho sognato che, non so come, sono riuscito a tornare indietro nel tempo , fino al "lontano" 1994, con una seconda persona, che però cambiava a seconda del momento del sogno. Eravamo in piazza, di sabato o domenica sera, ad inizio dicembre. La cosa bella era il fatto che noi riuscissimo a riconoscere la gran parte delle persone, più giovani, mentre loro non avrebbero mai riconosciuto chi fossimo noi, dato che io ad esempio nel "94 non avevo che 3 anni.

Fattostà che decidiamo di andare nella creperia della piazza, locale che tra l' altro nel "94 non esisteva,  e che nella versione onirica sembrava più una pizzeria o una birreria piena di gente tutta allegra, e i proprietari erano stranamente più vecchi invece che più giovani.
Insomma, ci sediamo a tavolino assieme a degli sconosciuti. Allora io indico un tizio dall' aspetto  particolare che fa baldoria in lontananza e dico al signore affianco a me: "Quel tizio sembra una via di mezzo fra Dario Argento e Sam Raimi...", e quello mi guarda un pò incerto...
Dico io: " Dario Argento, sai, il regista..."
"Si si, ho presente Dario Argento, ma Sam Raimi...?"
"Sam Raimi! Il regista di Spider-Man!"
Ed in quel momento ci siamo guardati per un attimo entrambi, spaesati, e prima ho pensato "Possibile che non abbia visto Spider-Man?" e subito dopo "Caspita, come minimo lo gireranno  fra 10 anni...".
